Pfeifer & Langen: Sugar beet campaign 2024 starts under challenging conditions

Pfeifer & Langen's 2024/2025 sugar beet campaign starts in Könnern (Saxony-Anhalt) at the beginning of September. The beet will be processed at the Lage sugar factory (East Westphalia-Lippe) from 10 September, followed by Appeldorn (Rhineland) on 12 September. The factories in Jülich and Euskirchen will start their campaign on 19 September. Due to the expected large quantity of beet, this year's campaign will be particularly long; in Könnern, processing of the last beet is expected to last until the end of February. As every year, the company's focus is on producing sugar from regional beet, with production in the factories running around the clock due to the complex processes involved and the limited storage capacity of the sugar beet. In this campaign, the company is already relying on renewable energy in the form of biomass for sugar production at two sites. This brings Pfeifer & Langen another important step closer to its goal of climate-neutral sugar production by 2040 at the latest. The company is aiming to use its own biomass in the form of beet pulp as soon as the political framework for this is created.

The sugar beet cultivation year was characterised by major challenges. The spring of 2024 was characterised by unusually high rainfall, which led to delayed sowing in many growing regions. In the Rhineland and in Lage in particular, sowing lasted well into May, two to three weeks later than the average of the last ten years.

In contrast, the Könnern site benefited from good sowing conditions.
