Alfa Laval and Bisviridi cooperate: biofuels from organic waste

Alfa Laval, an expert in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and liquid handling, and Bisviridi, a new BioteCH4 Group company, operator of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants in the UK, are working together to increase the sustainability potential of organic and food waste recycling.

The partnership will combine Alfa Laval's Prodec Oil Plus decanter, designed for efficient oil separation, with anaerobic digestion to convert oil and grease waste into biofuel. This pioneering process, developed and patented by Bisviridi, produces Bio Crude, an environmentally friendly alternative to oil-based fuels. Bio Crude can be refined into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The Alfa Laval Prodec Oil Plus decanter, a key component, can be seamlessly integrated into any AV system and offers numerous advantages. Prior to methanogenesis, the decanter efficiently extracts oil from organic waste and removes oils, fats and grease components. This allows the remaining components to be reintroduced into the AV system with minimal impact on biogas production. The resulting bio-crude oil has an impressive purity level of up to 99.5 %, making it an ideal feedstock for refineries to produce biofuel for the SAF market.

Through a recent collaboration with BioteCH4, the AV plant can achieve a production capacity of up to 300 litres of oil per hour, while seamlessly expanding and diversifying the AV operator's revenue stream. The Prodec Oil Plus decanter's innovative design ensures easy operation and maintenance.
