Wide range of sustainable packaging

Schur Flexibles Group is making it easier for users to switch to more sustainable packaging. The specialist for flexible packaging solutions provides a wide range of resource-saving alternatives for almost every application, and with its packaging products, it also intends to shake up the confectionery industry.

As one of the leading suppliers of flexible packaging in Europe, Schur Flexibles stands for the responsible use of plastics along the entire value chain. Under the umbrella of the group’s 5R concept – Responsibility, Recycling, Renewal, Reduce and Replace – a whole range of sustainable packaging solutions has already been brought to market.

This success is based on recyclable plastics, as well as products made from renewable resources. Another important factor has been the significant reduction in the overall use of materials. This has been achieved by developing extremely thin and at the same time durable films. As part of its “rethink” initiative, the group is rethinking packaging together with its customers. In some cases, this involves a 1:1 conversion to a recyclable alternative; in other cases, it can mean a completely new packaging system. Savings in plastic of up to 80 % have already been achieved on behalf of Schur Flexibles customers.

These efforts have led to resource-saving packaging solutions that offer optimized performance in terms of product protection, quality and attractive optics. This leads to important benefits for customers: for many consumers, more sustainable packaging is now a reason to buy a particular product, thus ensuring that packaging can become a real competitive advantage. In addition, a significant reduction in the use of raw materials leads to a reduction in material costs and packaging weight, thereby also reducing transport costs, the pending plastics tax and, above all, CO2 emissions.

In addition to recyclable mono PP flow wrap films for jelly bears, sweets and the like, the group also offers recyclable twist films to safely pack the latter. The MonoTwister(re) range includes recyclable, easily twistable mono PP or PE films that can be completely or partially laminated with aluminium or metallized polyolefin films. Furthermore, by offering a sophisticated finish with flexo, roto or digital printing, the company provides confectionery manufacturers with very good options for optimized presentation at the POS and, thanks to small series digital printing, this also applies to seasonal products.

A new addition to the range of twist films is the innovative PaperTwister(re), which replaces the classic twistable wax paper. With this solution, the group succeeded in replacing the wax layer with a cleverly engineered coating. While wax papers are not considered recyclable in all countries, PaperTwister(re) geographically offers more extensive recyclability. Featuring good tear resistance and release properties, it is in no way inferior to its predecessors.

PaperFlow(re) is another completely new packaging product which enables the secure wrapping of chocolate bars and tablets with a new look. PaperFlow(re) is recyclable, has a high-quality cold seal and can easily be processed on existing systems. Thanks to its barrier options which offer reliable protection against oxygen and moisture, it can be tailored to the special requirements of different products. Printed and finished with tactile varnishes, this flow wrap bag is a new eye-catcher at the POS. In addition, the paper film can be metallized, and thus its familiar look can be combined with a new appearance to highlight its sustainability. PaperFlow(re) thus offers companies with a focus on sustainability in communication a real competitive advantage.
